Overview:

UK/EU-trained and licensed doctors can work in China on invitation by a China-based clinic or hospital, and will be allowed into the country on a Z Visa, or ‘work visa’. However, opening your own clinics without Chinese help is a trickier matter. As with all Z Visas, the duration of the working visa can’t be extended, but the doctor can renew it for another year towards the end of its duration.

There are three main steps that every foreign-trained doctor needs to practice clinically in China, once you have been given a job offer by a Chinese company, your company may take care of some or all of these for you. These rules also apply to doctors trained in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.

  1. Take a foreign doctor examination in China, with both written and oral tests. Enquire at your local Public Health Bureau for the designated place to register and take the exam (see the bottom of the article for a list of first-tier-city bureau addresses); they are usually held in local medical colleges.

  2. Apply for a work permit, using the documents mentioned on this page.

  3. Apply for the Permit for Foreign Doctors Practicing Medicine Short-time in China at the Medical Administration Division of your local Public Health Bureau.

Documents needed to take the exam:

  • Application form for Foreign Doctors Practicing Medicine Short-time, in both Chinese and English.

  • Degrees, diplomas or certificates, notarised in China.

  • Foreign Medical License, notarised in China.

  • Health certificates provided by designated hospitals in China (check with local Public Health Bureau for information).

  • Resume.

  • Recommendations from two Chinese doctors, both with at least secondary senior physician title, within the same speciality. Attach photocopies of certificates confirming the Chinese doctors’ ranks in the Chinese medical establishment.

  • If someone is registering the foreign doctor on his or her behalf, that person should carry a paper stating this, with the doctor’s signature. A photocopy or fax will not do.

  • Two recent passport photos.

  • A photocopy of the license of the medical agency or agencies that is/are giving the invitation and job offer to the foreign doctor.

Normally the test is held twice a year, in February and August, though this may change depending on the province. The test results should be delivered after 30 days.
